| ●開拓のはじめ |
|
幕府直轄地となった寛政11年（1799年）に官船政徳丸が江戸より直行し苦難の末95日目に厚岸に入港、東北海道開拓の玄関としてさまざまな歴史を重ねてきた厚岸は天然の良港と資源に恵まれ経済活動の中心地として明治を迎えている。明治23年、太田村に屯田兵村が設置されるとともに内陸部の開拓が進められ現在の酪農郷のいしずえを築いている。

| ●Beginning of Colonization |
|
In 1799, when the syogunate tool derect control of eastern Hokkaido, the goverment ship Seitokumaru sailed directoly from Edo (now Tokyo) to Akkeshi and landed after a difficult 95-day voyage. Since then, Akkeshi has been a gateway to eastern Hokkaido development, with a fine natural harbor and resources. In 1890, soldier-farmers developed inland areas, building the foundation of the current dairy-farming land.

| ●町名の由来 |
|
釧路発達史によると太田口にあった小沼（アッケシュトー）から発したと言う説があるが、現在ではアイヌ語のアッケケシ（牡蛎の多い所）からアッケシに転化したという説もある。

| ●Origin of the Town Name |
|
Although the historical records of Kushiro's development suggest that it was named after a small marsh (Akkeshutou) in Otaguchi. According to one explanation, "Akkekeshi" ("a place with many oysters" in Ainu) became Akkeshi.

| ●国指定重要文化財［正行寺本堂］ |
寛政11年（1799年）に建てられた浄土真宗本願寺派満長寺を明治43年に新潟県から移転しほぼそのままに復元している。けやき造りの本堂の内部には繊細な透かし彫りが施され天井には十六弁の菊の花が描かれている。けやき造りの静かなたたずまいが重厚で格調高い雰囲気をかもしだし、歴史の流れを感じることができる。

●Shougyou Temple
(Designated National Cultural Asset) |
Manchou Temple was built in Niigata in 1799 (the 11th year of the Kansei era)for the Honganji School of the Jodo-shinshu sect. In1910, it was shipped to Akkeshi and reassembled precisely as it had originally stood, under the new name of Shogyou Temple. Several delicate engravings can be found in the main hall, which is built of Keyaki (zelkova trees). The ceiling lattice is decorated with 16-petal chrysanthemums. The building's Keyaki construction conveys a sense of profundity in a serene setting, hinting at the structure's long history.

 太田屯田開拓記念館 |
太田屯田開基100年を記念して平成3年にオープン。当時の生活を復元、展示している。

 国指定史跡「国泰寺跡」 |
春になると500本のエゾヤマザクラが咲き、今もなお葵の紋が残されている国泰寺の歴史はそのまま厚岸の歴史でもある。文化元年（1804年）に蝦夷三官寺として建てられ、間宮林蔵、松浦武四郎も立ち寄っている。

| ●Kokutai Temple Site |
The history of Kokutai Temple is that of Akkeshi Town. Tokugawa mallow crests remain, and 500 Ezoyamazakura (a wild cherry) bloom in spring. Built in 1804 as one of three governmental temples in Ezo (Hokkaido), Rinzo Mamiya and Takeshiro Matsuura visited it.

15 minutes from JR Akkeshi Station by bus bound for Kokutai Temple.

 厚岸町郷土館 |
国泰寺の右手にあり、国の重要文化財「国泰寺関係資料」のうちの日鑑記（複写本）や、考古資料、生活用具などの民俗資料が展示されている。

| ●Akkeshi Town Local Historical Museum |
Located to the right of Kokutai-ji Temple, the museum exhibits Nikkanki(reproduction), which is one of "Kokutai-ji Temple relevant documents" that are designated as a cultural asset of national importance, archaeological evidence, and folklore materials such as livingware.

 愛冠岬（アイカップ岬）・緑のふるさと公園 |
|
ダケカンバやエゾマツが生い茂る中を森林浴を楽しみながら歩く。地上28ｍの樹海観察塔、博物館、樹木園などがあり緑豊かな森の中でより深く自然に親しむことができる。『アイカップ』はアイヌ語で『矢が届かないところ』という意味。ＪＲ厚岸駅から国泰寺線終点で降り徒歩30分。

| ●Cape Aikappu Green Country |
|
This park includes a 28-m tower to observe trees, museums and tree gardens. Come close to nature in verdant forests, enjoy shinrinyoku (forest bathing) among birches and Ezo spruces. Aikappu means "where arrows cannot reach" in Ainu. A 30-minute walk from the terminus of the Kokutai Temple Line, which starts from JR Akkeshi Station.

 原生花園あやめヶ原 |
|
のんびりと草を食む馬たちに守られて可憐に咲くあやめに誰しも感動の声をあげる。毎年、6月の下旬にヒオウギアヤメの群落が紫の花弁を一斉に開き始める。厚岸から霧多布行きのバスに乗り20分。ダケカンバの林を抜けると群青の海が向こうに見えてくる。

| ●Ayamegahara (Natural Flower Garden) |
| Visitors shout when they see the lovely irises blooming as if protected by horses grazing freely. Late every June, blackberry lily communities begin to open their purple petals all at once. After a 20-minute bus ride from Akkeshi for Kiritappu and passing through birch forests, you will reach this field to find an ultramarine sea. |

 厚岸町海事記念館 |
| たくさんの模型漁船群、捕鯨王国だった厚岸の昔を偲ばせる写真、漁法の移り変りが一目で分かるパネル、操舵体験室など海が身近に感じられる1階、プラネタリウムが楽しめる2階に分かれている。緑地帯を挟んで立つ役場庁舎と合体させると大きな船になるユニークな設計は海の町厚岸の心意気を感じさせる。

| ●Akkeshi Marine Museum |
|
On the 1st floor, visitors can feel the sea close to them. Enjoy Planetariums on the 2nd floor. The former includes model fishing boats, photos which remind us of Akkeshi's days as a kingdom of whale fishing, panels which illustrate the changes in fishing methods, and steering simulation with the town hall across a greenbelt, which makes us feel the spirit of the marine town.

Surrounded by the thick greenery of Cape Aikappu, the building stands amidst the fragrance of wood and has a gymnasium and a workshop for ball games, pottery,woodworking and other activities.

 大黒島 |
厚岸湾の沖合に浮かぶ周囲6.1ｋｍの小さな島に毎年、4月下旬になるとコジロウウミツバメが賑やかに渡ってくる。島の海岸部は断崖絶壁で海鳥達の繁殖地になっている。町では年一回自然観察会を開いている。（国の天然記念物に指定されているため許可が必要）

| ●Daikoku Island (National Natural Monument) |
Late every April, storm petrels migrate to this island, those circumference is 5.8 km
and which is offshore of Akkeshi Bay. The seaside areas of the island are steep cliffs where seabirds breed. The town holds a nature observation tour annually.
（Because the island is designated a National Natural Monument, visitors must obtain permission.）

『コンキリエ』 |
厚岸の味覚を思う存分堪能できる施設『コンキリエ』。厚岸湾・厚岸湖を一望でき、バーベキューコーナーで厚岸特産の新鮮なカキやアサリを食べることができる。カキ料理をメインとしたレストランやお土産コーナーもある。

| ●Akkeshi Taste Terminal "Conchiglie" |
"Conchiglie" is a facility where you can enjoy specialties of Akkeshi to your hearts' content. You can have locally produced fresh oysters and clams at a barbecue corner with a full view of Akkeshi Bay and Akkeshi Lake. It also has a restaurant with oyster dishes and souvenir shops.
