●開拓のはじめ
　アイヌの人々との交易のため、松前藩がこの地にクスリ場所と呼ばれる漁場をひらいたのは、寛永年間の頃といわれている。明治3年には場所請負人の佐野孫右衛門が、秋田、山形、函館地方から174戸637名を移住させ、和人の本格的な定住が行われた。この都市を釧路市における市民生活のはじまりとしている。
●Beginning of Colonization
In the kanei era (1663-1672), the Matsumae clan already established posts to trade with Ainu. It is believed,however, that the Japanese first settled in and founded Kushiro in 1870, when Magoemon Sano, a "basho" contractor, colonized with 637 immigrants of 174 families from Akita, Yamagata and the Hakodate area.

●市名の由来
　いろいろな説があるが、昭和50年発行の釧路叢書によればアイヌ語の「クシベツ」あるいは「クシナイ」が語源にあたり、「通り抜けることのできる川」の意味とある。川が重要な交通路であった頃の釧路は、厚岸や根室、十勝、網走への要衡となっていた。また「釧」には腕輪という意味もある。
●Origin of the Town Name
There are many views. According to the Kushiro Novels published in 1975, Kushiro comes from "kushibetsu" or "kushinai" meaning passable "rivers" in Ainu. When rivers were transportion routes, Kushiro was an important junction to Akkeshi, Nemuro, Tokachi and Abashiri. "Kushi" also means bracelets.

EGG(ever green garden)		 ●Kushiro Fisherman's Wharf "MOO" and "EGG"
This is very stylish waterfront facility which can amuse every family member with its first floors . MOO is kaleidoscopic with various shops and restaurants, and EGG is Japan's first all-glass-enclosed, all-weather green space where seasonal flowers bloom one after another throughout the year. The sites are about a 12-minute walk from Kushiro Station. MOO viewed from the Nusamai Bridge is fantastic, when it is tinged by the evening sun.

　鳥取ドーム
夏の期間が短い釧路地方において、太陽光が透過するドーム屋根と、天然の芝生に近い感触のサンドフィルコートの体育館は四季を通じて様々なスポーツを楽しむことができます。特に夜間や寒さの厳しい冬期は、テニス愛好者（3面利用可）で賑わっています。 ●Tottori Dome
In the Kushiro area where the summer season is relatively short, we can enjoy a range of sporting activities in the dome. With sunlight penetrating its roof, the sand-filled synthetic turf surface feels like a natural lawn. During the night and especially in the winter season, when the weather is severe, the courts are often extremely popular amongst tennis players. (Three courts are available)

　和商市場
　昭和29年に開設。釧路といえば和商。何をおいてもここに来なければ釧路に来たかいがない。朝一番に水揚げされた魚貝類を中心に生鮮食品が並ぶ。威勢のいいカケ声と鮮度の良さが売り物。

釧路市立美術館

　10階の展望台からは太平洋、釧路湿原、阿寒連峰など360度の眺望を楽しむことができる。様々な市民要望に応える生涯学習の場として、各種講座やイベントを開催するほか、3階の釧路市立美術館での美術展は、多くの市民の人気を博している。

Since its opening many events have been held here as a life-long learning peace ,responding to various demands of citizens.It has a 360゜observation room on the 10th floor,and the Art Gallery on the 3rd floor is popular as an art exhibition room whichi citizens have long waited for.

　

　米町（よねまち）

　釧路発祥の地。神社仏閣が多く、かつては商家・遊廓が建ち並び　賑を極めた町。当市最古の木造建築物を資料館として保存整備した「釧路ふるさと館」では、当時の生活などをしのぶことができる。久寿里会跡や丸太学校跡が残る佐野碑公園、啄木の歌碑が建ち、港を一望できる米町公園など是非とも立ち寄りたいところである。

●Yonemachi
In Yonemachi where Kushiro's development began,there is the Yonemachi Furusato-kan, which reminds visitors of the life of colonization days. Kushiro visitors must stop by Yonemachi, as there are Sano Memorial Park, which includes the sites of Kusurikaisyo and log schools, and Yonemachi park, where the monument inscribed with Takuboku Ishikawa's poem stands.
　春採湖（はるとりこ）

　市の南東部に位置し周囲4.7ｋｍの海跡湖である春採湖は、ヒブナが生息する湖として国の天然記念物に指定されている。周辺には先住民の生活の場であったチャランケチャシコツや竪穴郡が国指定史跡として保存されている。湖の北側一帯は公園として整備され、湖に臨む高台には博物館や青少年科学館が建ち、市民の憩いの場となっている。

●Lake Harutori
Lake Harutori, situated in the southeastern part of Kushiro, is a brackish lake with a circumference of 4.7km. It is the habitat of Hibuna, a kind of crucian carp that is National Natural Monument. Around the lake are Charanke-chashi Site and the Harutori Pit Houses, where indigenous people lived. They are preserved carefully as national ancient monuments. The entire area to the north of the lake is citizen's relaxation place, Harutori Park. On the hill are the City Museum, the Science Museum and Kushiro Higashi Junior High School with seven beautiful rings. These buildings create a modern atmosphere, and lake reflects calmly both old and new days.

北海道立釧路芸術館は釧路圏の特色あるコレクションづくりを目指し、自然をテーマとする芸術作品や写真などの収集をはじめ、さまざまなテーマで国内外の優れた美術作品を紹介する特別展等を企画開催、また映画上映や講演会などたくさんのイベントが行われており、芸術情報の発信拠点となっています。 ● Kushiro Art Museum, Hokkaido
Kushiro Art Museum, Hokkaido aims to promote local Kushiro artwork. It is a center for viewing and appreciating artistic works and photographic collections with a natural theme. Additionally, the site hosts a wide range of events introducing both international and domestic art, as well as lectures, film showing and other projects.

●阿寒湖温泉
　1858年（安政5年）、松浦武四郎が訪れたときにはすでにアイヌの人達が利用していたという古い歴史を持った温泉地。『マリモの唄』はあまりに有名。昭和9年に国立公園に指定され、道東の名勝地として王座を占めている。
●Akan Lakeside Hot Spring
This is a historic old hot spring area which is said to have already been used by the Ainu when Takeshiro Matsuura visited in 1858. The "Marimo song" is quite famous. The area was designated a National Park in 1934. Since then, it has occupied the premier position of scenic spots in eastern Hokkaido.

　
　あかんランド丹頂の里
　釧路から阿寒湖温泉に向かう国道240号線（マリモ国道）沿いにある「あかんランド丹頂の里」は、野営場・サイクリングコース・フィールドアスレチック・焼肉コーナー・パークゴルフ・テニス・炭砿と鉄道館・レクリエーション農園が整い、アウトドアライフが気軽に楽しめます。
　赤いべレー（丹頂の里保養センター）は宿泊施設を完備し、研修室、大広間、レストランで各種会合等の利用もでき、大浴場はナトリウム塩化物泉の温泉でサウナ、泡風呂、打たせ湯を備え、日帰り入浴で疲れと汗を一緒に洗い流すことができます。
　また赤いべレー向いには、道の駅（阿寒丹頂の里）、釧路市阿寒国際ツルセンター、北緯43゜美術館等の施設があり、冬季は200羽程のタンチョウを目の前で観察でき、年間を通して、自然と親しみながら、リフレッシュすることができます。

●特別天然記念物『マリモ』
　マリモ…アイヌの人達は湖の妖精と呼んでいた。明治30年にシュリコマベツで発見されてからビロードのような深い緑色にひかれて訪れる人も多い。

Marimo algae balls (Cladophora sauteri), or "Lake Fairy" in Ainu, Have drawn many people since found in Syurikomabetsu.
　阿寒湖定期観光船
　釧路市阿寒湖のマリモ展示観察センターがあるチュウルイ島、湖畔屈指の景勝地滝口などを1時間ほどで遊覧できる。10〜12人乗りのモーターボートもありグループで楽しめる。
4月下旬から11月まで無休。

●Akan Tourist Steamboat
The steamboat tours Lake Akan for 1 hour, stopping by Churui Island and its Marimo Exhibition & Obeservation Center, and Takiguchi, one of the most beautiful Akan lakeside spots. There are also 10-to 12-passenger motorboats for group visitors.

●Akanland Tancho-no-Sato(Akanland Amusement Park)
Located along National Route 240 (Marimo National Route) from Kushiro to Lake Akan Hot Springs, Akanland Tancho-no-Sato features a campsite, cycling courses, an athletic field, a barbecuing site, miniature golf, tennis courts, a coal-mining and railroad museum and a sightseeing farm, thus providing many opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities.
Circle House Red Beret incorporates hotel rooms, study rooms, large halls and restaurants which can be used for various meetings. You can also choose to use the large sodium-salt spring bathhouse, which is equipped with saunas, bubble baths and utase-yu to banish fatigue and feel refreshed.
Across from the Red Beret are the "road station" Michi-no-Eki (Akan Tancho-no-Sato), Akan International Crane Center, Hokui-43゜(43゜North L.) Museum and other facilities. In winter, you can observe over 200 japanese cranes right in front of you. Throughout the year, this place provides many opportunities to interact with nature and feel relaxed.

　アイヌコタン・アイヌチセ
　北海道で一番大きなアイヌコタン。有名な彫刻家が多数、民芸品の製作にあたっている。またチセでは、昭和59年に国の重要無形民俗文化財に指定されたアイヌ古式舞踊を観ることができる。チセはアイヌ語で「家」の意味。

●Ainu Kotan and Ainu Chise
In the largest Ainu Kotan (Village) in Hokkaido, famous sculptors produce folkcrafts. In the chise (Ainu: house), see ancient Ainu dance, designated in 1984 as a National Important Intangible Ethnic Cultural Property.

　阿寒湖畔エコミュージアムセンター
　素晴らしい阿寒の大自然を探り楽しんでいただく手助けをするため、館内の床面に阿寒の航空写真をデザインし、その上の解説ポストでは森と湖・火山などの情報をわかりやすく紹介しています。
また、エコミュージアムセンターから「ボッケ」までは、徒歩10分（約500m）の位置にあり、自然散策のコースとして最適です。お気軽にご利用ください。

●開拓のはじめ
　慶長年間白糠場所の最初の商い場が「モセウシ」にあったと伝えられているが、海はあるが港はなく陸路も整備されずにいた音別の開拓の歩みは遅い。開拓が本格的に行われたのは明治も半ばを過ぎてからのようである。
尺別原野には愛知県から清水安太郎が、音別原野には福島県からの一行が霧里には岩手県の高橋力右衛門がそれぞれ開拓のトップをきって入地したと町史は伝えている。
●Beginning of Colonization
It is reported the first trading place of Shiranuka-basyo exited in Moseushi in the Keicho era (1596-1614). However, having the sea but no port nor complete land route, Onbetsu has a rather short history of development. Regular development seems to have begun after the middle of the Meiji era (1868-1912). According to town history, Yasutaro Shimizu from Aichi Prefecture colonized in Shakubetsu Plain, a party from Fukushima Prefecture colonized in Onbetsu Plain , and Rikiemon Takahashi from Iwate Prefecture in Kirisato, to initiate development.

　シックな色彩が落ち着いた雰囲気をかもしだしている。1階には図書館の他に音別特産のフキでつくる紙の体験学習があり、紙すきを体験できる。
２階の郷土資料館には音別町の歴史を伝える資料や民具なども展示されていて興味深い。

　憩いの森
　ＪＲ音別駅から市街地を抜けて20分、1万haの芝生がパステルカラーの光の中昔むかしの物語を秘めて待っている。高台の向こう側にはバンガローの宿泊施設や木製遊具、アスレチックなどがあり思いっきり自然と遊べる。
●Recreation Forest
Drive 20 minutes from JR Onbetsu Station to get out of the urban district, and you will be welcomed by a 10,000-ha turf in pastel lights, which enshrines once-upon-a-time stories. Beyond a hill are bungalow-type accommodations, wooden playground equipment and athletic facilities, and you can play with nature to your heart's content..
　花といえば桜。ここ憩いの森には約200本のエゾヤマザクラが咲き乱れる。いつでも利用できるバーベキューコーナーもある。

●Cherry Festival
Flowers imply cherry brossoms in Japan. Here in the Recreation Forest, approximately 200 Ezoyamazakura (wild cherry trees) bloom. Log stages play a role in the Cherry Festival held in Kushiro Subprefecture early in May.

　「えっそんなの知らない」という人でもすぐに夢中になってしまうのがパークゴルフ。管内でもっとも早く昭和60年に整備され、9時からプレーできる。クラブハウスもあり用具も無料で貸出中。（ナイター設備有8時まで）

●36-Hole Miniature Golf Courses
Miniature golf soon fascinates even those who say, "What? I don't do such a sport." These courses were first established in the subprefecture in 1985, and visitors can play from 9 a.m. There is a clubhouse, and miniature-golf equipment is lent free of charge.

　三階滝
　音別本流に流れ込む支流の滝。駅から道道を上がってスーパー林道に入ってすぐ。
：スーパー林道-浦幌〜音別〜白糠を結ぶ道内で最長規模の林道。
●Sankai Taki Fall
This is a waterfall in a branch which flows into the main stream of the Onbetsu River. Find it after ascending the road from Onbetsu Station and entering the Super Woodland Path. Hokkaido's longest woodland path, which connects Urahoro, Onbetsu and Shiranuka.

　　自然でさりげない風景が慌ただしい日常を忘れさせてくれる。駐車場はもちろん炊事場、トイレが完備された森の中でのキャンプ場はみんなの人気者。予約をすればバンガローも借りられる。

●街路灯116基
　薄紫の淡い光が国道をロマンチックに照らす音別町。116基の街路灯は町の花リンドウをモチーフにデザインされたもので「日本一明るい町に」という願いがこめられている。
●116 Streetlights
In Onbetsu romantic pale-purple lights illuminate national routes. The 116 streetlights are designed by using gentian, the town flower, as a motif, with the hope to create "Japan's brightest town."

　

　パシクル沼
　夕陽が西の山に沈むころ幻想の世界を写しだすパシクル沼は、白糠町との境界にある自然公園。
●Lake Pashikuru
The Lake Pashikuru area is a nature park on the border with Shiranuka Town. When the evening sun sets in the west mountains, the area creates a fantastic world.

●三竜の滝
　昔、アイヌ語で「トークッシャロ」（沼から水の流れる口）と言われるこの沼には主が住んでおり、山の中に隠れるように息づいている幽愁を秘めた沼とされている。
●大平洋で一本釣り
　きらめく波の下で”あきあじ”がジャンプしている音別の浜では太公望が日がな一日塩の香りときめている。場所取りは早めがいちばん。
●Rod-and-Reel Fishing in the Pacific
Salmon jump under the glittering waves of Onbetsu Beach, where Waltonians are throbbing all day long with the odor of the sea. The better to secure angling space.
