6千年前には海だった釧路湿原。約3千年もの時の流れを経て現在のような湿原になった。面積18,290ha、ヨシスゲの草原が80％を占め、丘陵地に近い湿原にはハンノキが純林を形成している。東西に10km、南北に35kmと指を広げた形で釧路市、釧路町、標茶町、鶴居村にまたがり国の天然記念物タンチョウをはじめ多くの野生動物が生息し、日本初のラムサール条約登録地として世界の注目を集めている。	Kushiro Marsh is said to have been under the sea 6,000 years ago. Its present marsh from arose after about 3,000 years. Grassland of reeds and sedges covers 80% of the entire 18,290-ha area, and alders form stands near hills in the marsh. It stretches 10 km from east to west and 35 km from north to south over Kushiro City, Kushiro Town, Shibecha Town and Tsurui Village in the form of an open hand. It is the habitat of Tancho (Japanese crane), a National Natural Monument, and many other wild animals and attracts the world's attention as Japan's first site designated under the Ramsar Convention.

Meet carefully the Tancho nesting grounds and gray heron colonies. 細岡展望台周辺図 Hosooka Marsh Viewpoint Area Map 達古武湖や釧路川を眺めながら車を走らせると辿り着く細岡展望台からは釧路川の蛇行と雄阿寒、雌阿寒岳を一望できる。 夕日が沈み黄金色に染まる湿原も美しい。 近くの細岡ビジターズラウンジではお茶を飲みながらくつろげる。 細岡展望台　Hosooka Marsh Viewpoint 　 コッタロ湿原展望台 Kottaro Marsh Viewpoint 湿原横断道路のなかほどの丘の上に有るこの展望台からはもっとも原始性豊かな典型的な低層湿原を見渡すことができる。春になると無数のエゾアカガエルの産卵が始まり賑やかな合唱が湿原にあふれる。コッタロ川に沿って500ｍ間隔で駐車スペースがある。 This viewpoint on the hill situated in the middle of the trans- marsh road commands the most primitive fen mires. In spring, innumerable Ezoakagaeru, a kind of frog, begin spawning, and their animated chorus fills the marsh.
