| ●開拓のはじめ |
|
標茶の開拓は明治１８年の釧路集治監から始まった。そして、明治34年の廃監、明治41年の軍馬補充部の設置、そして昭和20年の廃庁と時代の風に揺らぎながらも、酪農の道を歩み出し、行政施行80年の昭和40年には乳牛1万頭、牛乳も10万石（1,800万リットル）突破している。

| ●Beginning of Colonization |
|
Shibecha development began in 1885, when Kushiro Prison was established. From 1908 to 1945, the military horse replenishment division operated. The town began dairy farming, and in 1965, milk cows exceeded 10,000 and milk production 18-million lit.

| ●町名の由来 |
|
標茶は釧路川、別寒辺牛川、西別川の流域に広がり、アイヌ語で「シペッチャ」大きい川のほとりを意味している。

| ●Origin of the Town Name |
|
Shibecha, on three rivers, takes its name from the Ainu "Shibecha," meaning "on the shore of large rivers."

| ●サルボ展望台 |
|
塘路湖とシラルトロ湖の中間地帯に突出した小さな丘。国道391号線の沿道にあり、入り口に案内板がある。ハイキングコースも完備していて40分ほどで探勝できる。「サルボ」はアイヌ語でサル（葦原）ボ（子）ビラ（崖）で、小さい葦原にある崖の意味。

| ●Sarubo Viewpoint |
|
Sarubo Viewpoint rises between lakes Toro and Shirarutoro along National Route 391. There is an information board at the entrance. Hikers can explore beautiful spots in 40minutes. In Ainu, "Sarubo" means "the cliff in the small reed field."

 塘路湖 |
|
塘路湖は釧路湿原三湖のうちもっとも大きい。武田泰淳の『森と湖のまつり』の舞台にもなっている。夏はカヌー、冬はワカサギの氷上釣りで賑わう。

| ●Lake Toro |
|
Lake Toto is the largest of Kushiro Marsh's three lakes. Taijun Takada set his "Forest and Lake Festivals" here, where summer attracts canoeists and winter brings ice-fishers angling for Wakasagi (pond smelt).

 塘路湖エコミュージアムセンター |
ＪＲ塘路駅から徒歩5分。釧路湿原国立公園を訪れた方々に釧路湿原の自然や利用についての情報を色々な形で提供し、より楽しく快適に湿原に親しんでいただくため、平成9年10月にオープンしました。
どうぞこのセンターを、そして素晴らしい釧路湿原をゆっくりとお楽しみ下さい。

| ●Lake Toro Eco Museum Center |
|
A five-minute walk from JR Toro Station. This center was opened in October 1997 to provide various types of information to Kushiro Shitsugen National Park visitors. Information is provided on the nature of Kushiro Marsh and on how to enjoy the Marsh more fully and comfortably. Feel free to use this center to appreciate the wonderful Kushiro Marsh to your heart's content.

|
豊かな水の流れとともに標茶の町は生きている。市街地は、釧路川両岸に広がり人々は川に集い遊ぶ。弾ける笑い声は、標茶の元気の源。サッカー、テニス、パークゴルフ場が整備され世代を越えた交流の場となっている。夏はカヌーイストにとって川の駅。

|
The people of Shibecha coexist with the rich flow of water. In the city area on both sides of the Kushiro River, people gather and enjoy themselves by the river. The park, complete with a soccer field, tennis courts and a miniature golf course, is a community space for all generations.

| ●シラルトロ湖 |
|
湿原の創世期を思わせる周囲7.5ｋｍの小さな沼。タンチョウ、ハクチョウ、カモなど鳥たちの楽園になっている。

| ●Lake Shirarutoro |
|
This marshy lake 7.5 km in circumference harbors waterfowl including Japanese cranes, swans and wild ducks.

 多和平 |
視界360度に地平線が広がる。雄阿寒岳、雌阿寒岳、摩周岳、斜里岳、知床の山脈…。多和平だけで1,586ha、上オソベツ団地を含めた2,232haは、公共牧場としては日本一の大牧場である。羊が遊ぶ緑の丘に、カントリーレストラン。展望台やキャンプ場が完備。秋には、多和平カントリーフェスタが開催される。

Commanding a panoramic view of Oakan, Meakan, Mashu and Shari mountains, and the Shiretoko range. The Japan's largest public stock farm with 2,232 ha, including the Kamiosobetsu housing complex. Sheep play near restaurants, viewpoints and campsites.

 駒ヶ丘ふれあいの森 |
|
深い緑の中、全身に清涼な空気が染み込んでくる。駒ヶ丘一帯に広がる緑の公園で小鳥の姿をおって散策路を歩いていたら夢がみつかりそう。

In the dense wood, fresh air envelops your body. You may discover dreams if you stroll the nature trail and follow little birds in this fresh green park that covers the whole Komagaoka area.

 標茶郷土資料館 |
一歩中に入るとヒンヤリした空気が全身を包む。歴史の風であろうか。北海道集治監釧路分監の本館として明治18年に建てられ、昭和41年に町指定文化財に指定されている。先史時代から現代にいたる標茶の歴史が丁寧に展示されている。2回には町内に生息する動物たちの剥製がまるで生きているかのように配置されている。

| ●Shibecha Town Folk Museum |
Walk back in history in this 1885 building, originally part of Kushiro Prison. The Designated Cultural Property offers exhibits telling of Shibecha from prehistoric times, including stuffed animals of the town.

 パイロットフォレスト |
1万haのパイロットフォレスト（指標林）づくりを始めたのは昭和32年のこと。現在では見事なカラマツの林がつづき北海道名木美林にも指定されている。森林資源としてばかりでなく、厚岸地区の水源かん養林としても重要な役割を果たしている。見学したい方は管理事務所へ。

This forest, launched as a 10,000-ha pilot forest in 1957, is designated a Hokkaido Fine Tree and Beautiful Forest. It is important as a forest resource and for harboring Akkeshi water sources.

| ●標茶集治監死亡者の碑 |
|
昭和18年に釧路集治監が開設され、最高1,371人の囚人が労役に服した。鉄道の開設や硫黄の採掘、道路の開削など、厳しい労役のために死亡した505名の慰霊のために昭和28年に建立されている。

|
国道391号線の塘路湖西岸から下久著呂へ向かい約7kｍ、生い茂るキタヨシの中を蛇行する釧路川が湿原の心臓部を形成している。

|
In this Marsh, 7 km toward Shimokuchoro from Route 391 on the west shore of Lake Toro, Kitayoshi reeds grow thickly where the Kushiro River meanders forming the heart of the marsh.
