| ●開拓のはじめ |
|
酪農、林業、観光産業が充実している弟子屈町の本格的な開発は明治10年の硫黄採掘から始まった。明治18年には本山七右衛門が温泉宿（現摩周パークホテル）開業、同20年には北海道で2番目の鉄道が硫黄山から標茶間に敷設されるなど隆盛をきわめたという。僅か9年で消えていった幻の鉄道だが、線路跡は今も『青葉トンネル』として歴史を伝えている。

| ●Beginning of Colonization |
|
Teshikaga, in which dairy farming, forestry and tourism flourish, began its development with sulfur mining in 1877. In 1885, Shichiemon Motoyama opened a spa (now the Park Hotel). In 1887, Hokkaido's second railway line was laid here, showing the prosperity of the town. Although the railroad was used for only nine years, the "Aoba Tunnel" is its historic trail.

| ●町名の由来 |
| 弟子屈の「テシカ」とはアイヌ語で「岩盤」「ガ」は「上」の意味。この辺りは昔、魚の溜まり場であったのに岩盤が多く、思うように魚が採れないとアイヌ人が嘆いてこの地をテシカガと呼んだと言われている。

| ●Origin of the Town Name |
| The "Teshika" of Teshikaga means "rocks," and "ga" means "on" in Ainu. In olden days, although fish gathered here, people could not catch them easily, due to the many rocks. Thus it is said that the name comes from the Ainu dislike of this fact.

 ヨーロッパ民藝館 |
18〜19世紀・ヴィクトリア時代にタイムスリップしてしまう。なかでもオーケストラを自動演奏する1915年にシカゴで生まれたというオーケストリアンは一度は聞きに来てほしいもののひとつ。別棟にレストランもあり、ポタージュからはじまりアイスクリームまで楽しめるランチョデラックスがおすすめ。

Slip back to Queen Victoria's 19th century. You should listen to the sound of the orchestrio, which performs orchestral music automatically. In a separate building enjoy a lunch special, which begins with potage and ends with ice cream (No holiday)

 屈斜路コタンアイヌ民俗資料館 |
屈斜路湖畔、コタンに建つ古代の神殿を思わせる資料館にはアイヌの人々が自然と共に生きてきた全てが紹介されている。ドーム状の天井にうつしだされる3面マルチスライドは必見の価値あり。

| ●Ainu Museum |
This Shrine-like museum stands on the shore of Lake Kussharo in Kotan, introducing every aspect of the Ainu, who have lived with nature. A triple -slide projector casts interesting images on the domed ceiling.

 原田康子『挽歌』文学碑 |
| 「私はゆっくり温泉町の通りを歩きだした。陽射しの強くなりかけた火山灰地の通りに…」釧路出身の作家原田康子氏の代表作『挽歌』のゆかりの地に文学碑が建立されている。

| ●Literary Monument to Yasuko Harada's Novel "Banka" |
|
"I began to stroll the street of the hot-spring town. Under the growing sunlight on the street of volcanic ash..." A literary monument was built in the place connect with "Banka," the work representative of Kushiro-born novelist Yasuko Harada. Stop here on your way, to enjoy a stroll.

 川湯相撲記念館 |
相撲史上に数々の金字塔を打ち立てた第48代横綱大鵬幸喜の少年時代からの写真など、栄光の記録を見ていると、「巨人・大鵬・卵焼き」の言葉が懐かしく思い出される。

| ●Kawayu Sumo Memorial Hall |
Koki Taiho, the 48th Yokozuna, made many monumental accomplishments in sumo history. His glorious record and photos from his youth remind us of the phrase, "Giants, Taiho, Omelets," which expressed everyone's favorites at that time.
