| ●開拓のはじめ |
|
明治１８年夏、釧路の茂尻矢から27戸が下雪裡に集団移住したのが開拓の始まりとされている。明治35年には福井県から青山奥左衛門が20余戸を率いて入植、その後、同40年には久著呂原野の開発に力を尽くした渡辺佐一郎が12才という若年で入地するなど、不屈の情熱を燃やして開拓に挑む人達は大正、昭和とつづき、鶴居村の基礎が築かれていったのである。

| ●Beginning of Colonization |
|
Colonization is said to have begun in 1885, when 27 families emigrated from Moyashiri in Kushiro to Shimosetturi. In 1902, Okuzaemon Aoyama came from Fukui Prefecture with 20 families. In 1907, Saichiro Watanabe settled here when he was 12 years old, afterward developing the Kuchoro wilderness . People who boldly , enthusiastically led development continued to settle here in the Taisho and Showa eras, laying the foundations for Tsurui Village.

| ●村名の由来 |
|
昭和12年、現在の阿寒町から分村した際、丹頂鶴の生息地であったことから「鶴居村」と定められた。しかし、内務省へ申達すると係官に「鶴がいるから鶴居村なら熊がいたら熊居村か。羽のある鶴のことだ飛んでいったらどうする。」と言われたような事もあったと鶴居村史は伝えている。

| ●Origin of the Village Name |
In 1973, when this area was divided from what is now Akan Town, it was named Tsurui Village because Japanese cranes lived there.("Tsurui" refers to the existence of cranes.)
The history of Tsurui Village records the following episode. When the Ministry of Home Affairs was notified of the name 'Tsurui' a clerk in charge complained : "If the village is named "Tsurui" because of tsuru (cranes), then a village with bears (kuma) could be named 'Kumai' As cranes have wings, what if they were to fly away?"

大人から子供まで誰もが楽しめる12haの広大な運動場。パットゴルフ、テニスコート、ゴーカートなどの遊具施設も数多く、気持ちいい汗を流した後は野外で炭火バーベキューを楽しめる。キャンプ場が無料で開放されているのもうれしい。

| ●Tsurui Sports Park |
|
This vast 12 ha sports park offers many opportunities for children and adults to enjoy sports. Visitors can enjoy many facilities including putting greens, tennis courts and go-cart track, and barbecue over charcoal fires after a refreshing day of playing sports. The campsite is open to the public free of charge.

釧路湿原は、昔、海だった。
陸地なのに岬の名がついているのはその名残とされている、ともに、釧路湿原の深部にあるがどさんこにまたがりゆっくりと見学できる。自然探勝会も開かれている。

 鶴居・伊藤タンチョウサンクチュアリ |
野生のタンチョウがすぐ近くで見られる場所。日本野鳥の会のレンジャーが駐在するネイチャーセンターが隣接していてタンチョウのことならほとんどのことを教えてもらえる。

| ●Tsurui Ito Sanctuary |
In this sanctuary, you can see wild japanese cranes close up. The Nature Center, where rangers of the Wild Bird Sanctuary of Japan are always stationed is adjacent to the Sanctuary and provides any information on Japanese cranes you would like to know.

 村民の森 |
よろこび、ふれあい、いきがい、いこいの４つの森からなる公園。高さ30ｍの展望塔、水車小屋、子供遊具などのほかオートキャンプ場もあり、休日には家族連れや団体客でにぎわっている。

| ●Tsurui Villager's Forest |
This park is divided into four woods: Joy, Interaction, Useful Life and Relaxation. It also contains an observatory 30 m in height, a water mill, playground equipment and an auto campsite, and has a lively atmosphere with many families and tourist groups on holiday.

The 30-m-high Observation Tower creates a dreamy scene with its stained glass.
On the rooftop, visitors can view the Shiretoko mountain range beyond the rural landscape.
